Cannonball Charlie
"Charlie" is a chestnut gelding born February 7, 2004 and sired by Devon Lane. His grand sires are Alydar and Storm Cat. He is also distantly related to Secretariat and Northern Dancer. Charlie raced only twice, but was not competitive for a racing career, so he was
retired by his kind trainer who knew Charlie was destined for a different career.
He has a very lean, athletic body with great muscle.
Charlie is healthy and sound and ready for his new home. He is extremely sweet
and loving with wonderful ground manners. He loves petting, grooming, and all
manner of attention. We have worked with him on the ground using Parelli
methods, and have taken him on trail several times. Nothing spooks him, and he
is very interested in pleasing you. He is calm and quiet and just needs a little
training for his new job.
Charlie has no issues or vices. He is non aggressive and very people oriented---also
kind and intelligent. He is about 16.hh.
Update -- May 2009
Charlie has been adopted by Christine who has had two OTTBs and kept them their whole lives.
The first one died in his 30s and the second one is 27 and still going strong. Charlie will be with her mare
and a 16 yo gelding and will live in Placerville, CA. Charlie has Christine's beloved grandfather's birthday and
and he is the grandson of her favorite childhood horse, Alydar, so she got attached to him before
she even came to see him.
Update -- June 2009
Report from Christine: "Charlie has been here a full week now & doing very well & I'm head over heels in love.
Syrah, the little Arab gelding is getting a little better at sharing my mare, Poppy,
with him so I think they will all be very happy together." It's not hard to see how happy
he is with his new companions from the photos Christine also included.
Update -- July 2009
Report from Christine: "I just thought I'd tell you how Charlie is doing. I've ridden him twice now
(not a lot due to this heat) and he's been just wonderful. The first time I was a good horse owner
& lunged him first & rode with friends around in the arena. The second time, I just hopped on,
rode thru my neighbor's pasture (like a mini trial ride) and over to the arena. He had been falling asleep,
literally, in the cross ties while I was tacking up so I figured I was pretty safe. He has wonderful gates,
and tracks so evenly. No rushing, no spooking, no bucking, etc. He's so much calmer than my 27 year old mare!!
Anyway, we're having fun and shooting for some dressage schooling shows in the fall assuming it
cools off enough for us to get in any real training. :)"
