Storm Flash (Click here for Past Performances)

ADOPTED !!!!!!!!

Storm Flash is a four year old gelding by Twin Spires (Storm Cat). He is a gorgeous 6.3 h/h dark bay gelding that came directly off track just a few days after his last race. Donated by long-time trainer Bill Anton, Flash was bred by Bill out of his favorite mare Sassy Conduction. While Bill could have sent the gelding into cheaper and less competitive races further north or privately sold him, he donated Flash to our program instead.

For now Flash is exploring his new world, he's full of energy and spunk and reminds us of other horses when they first arrived from the track. Flash is a cousin to our Ymustichasethecat (Kat) and his body type and facial features are quite similar, although in color he reminds us of Yah Never Know (Nevi).

During his coming down from the track period he was full of himself and had high energy which comes from the constant workouts and high calorie-fat feed and supplements given at the track. During this period he kicked out at something very hard and injured his right rear foot. We didn't know he had an injury because it manifested itself as an abscess and in winter horses are prone to abscess. However, this abscess did look different and felt different so instead of having our farrier drain it we called in our regular veterinarian. The first set of digital xrays showed no damage whatsoever but even after draining Flash was still uncomfortable in his foot. A second set of xrays showed a small splinter on the wing of the coffin bone.

We would like to thank Taylor ER Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Craig Brooks and the entire staff for the exceptional love and care they gave Flash while he spent a week with them. Jamie, who adopted Mister Deez, is a vet tech there and she made sure to spend every spare moment with him. Everyone at the hospital fell in love with Flash...he is a very good patient and is assisting in his after-care. Dr. Brooks successfully removed the bone fragment as shown in the photo but Storm Flash will be in rehab for nearly a year as his hoof sole grows back and he recovers. Because of this setback he is not currently for adoption.

We have all grown to love Flash...he has a wonderful personality and just loves human attention. He likes to have his lip played with and licks hands and is exceptionally well mannered, obedient and kind to everyone. Stay tuned for updates. His surgery, after care, special shoeing and long rehabilitation will be extremely costly to Neigh Savers. We will be looking for sponsors to help Flash out or just single donations that can be earmarked towards his care.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful vets. Dr. Charles Strickland who is our primary vet, takes care of all our horses in Clayton, remembers to give us a discount everytime and is in charge of Storm's after care. Dr. Brooks and the entire team at Taylor ER Veterinary Hospital were so terrific and greatly discounted the surgery and hospital stay making it affordable for us to exercise this option. One more thanks to Vet Tech Jamie Metcalf who gave us almost hourly updates and took many photos of our boy while he was in the clinic for a week.

Update: March 2011

Our primary vet Dr. Charles Strickland examined Nummy and took additional xrays and filed this report: "He seems to be doing very well. Removed the plate and the wound looks great. He is full weight bearing on it. Stomps the foot on the ground once in a while like he has no care in the world." Nummy also had his shoe removed and reset and the farrier said he has had an incredible 1/2" growth in just a few weeks. We are giving him a terrific hoof supplement and lots of TLC.

We have a small group of core supporters that always seem to step up when we ask for help. Our average donation is $50 so it takes many donations to actually support a horse in any event. However, it all goes into one bucket and we appreciate donations in any amount because we know they come from the heart.

Primary Benefactors: Vicky Dimitri (who donated her beloved Mister Deez to our program and was so worried about his getting hurt in racing that she only gave him one race and then retired him) and Michael Mellen, dba Branjam Stable (has been supporting Ymustichasethecat and is helping a teenage girl make her dreams of owning a horse come true).

We would like to thank Dawn Mellen, President, After the Finish Line for granting us funds that paid for nearly his entire surgery. AFL has now helped us a number of times and we are extremely grateful for this organization that grants funds to off track equine based charities throughout the United States.

The following valued and many long time and core donors made one time donations towards his care: Lorna Martin, Barbara Lonsbury, Francesca de la Flor, Pauline & Ritchie Robershaw, Allison Hazelton, Andy Kramer, Erika Holderith, Geri Minott, Sally Cruikshank, Devon Hoffman, Sandi Bell, Kathy Swanson, Pete & Pam Selvig, Christine Boyd, Lisa Lashaway, Diane Shimsak, Ingrid Nuernberg, Leslie Homan, Wally Shak.

Update: July 2011

Nummy has made a 100% recovery and has been adopted by our new friends Kate & Andrea from Santa Cruz, CA. Nummy will live on a 10 acre farm that is home to a small boarding facility so will never want for companionship both human and equine. In addition, Kate bakes delicious organic horse cookies so Nummy will also be happy with all his treats which he so loves. Andrea will be slowly training him to be a show horse. Critter Cookies is an organic cookie store with free shipping on most products. Check it out!!
