Why Trust
"Why Trust" or Trusty as we call him, is an unraced three year old gelding by Friends Lake. He was a $130,000 purchase at the Keeneland sale and was
bred in the bluegrass state of Kentucky.
Trusty was donated to Neigh Savers by compassionate trainer Kristin Mulhall, who takes excellent care of all of her horses and retires them as
soon as she realizes they may not race soundly or tell her they no longer wish to race.
Trusty was virtually scratched at the starting gate when a small bone chip near his knee was discovered. Several vets conferred and determined it
was not necessary to remove this chip as it would probably adhere back to the bone and was not floating. This is good for us and for Trusty. Surgery is always
risky at any rate and we are able to give Trusty the time off he needs. As he will never put the type of tremendous stress on his legs again as he would in racing,
this good looking and personable gelding has a fine future as a show or riding horse.
Trusty's adoption donation is only $500 at this time because the new owner will have to invest a few months in rehab and then train Trusty. If we train
and rehab him at Neigh Savers we will set his adoption donation at $2,000 and upwards depending upon his talent. We knew we'd love Trusty when the rig pulled into the farm and Trusty's
friendly head was hanging out with welcoming curiousity. It isn't often that a hauler will fall in love with a horse, but Kris from Running C Ranch even posted Trusty's photo
on his own FaceBook as Trusty had his head hanging out all the way from Hollywood Park to Clayton, CA. Everytime a car would pass he did the old head bob
which resulted in honking horns and people waving back. Anyone who is lucky enough to add Trusty to the family will get a real character!
Update - September 2010
Michelle, Xan and Mitra are adopting Trusty and taking him home on October 2, 2010. Here's a brief recap of their second visit with him.
"Once in the arena, Mitra worked him around the ring, he resisted her direction for a moment then it was like walking a big dog.
He went everywhere she wanted him to go ...Xan wanted to do 2 little exercises with him that (although I thought it was rather silly)
and she brought a barrel and a plastic garbage can into the arena (just to double check spooking - but she wanted to be sure we were aware
of any potential issues we needed to work on - see you know this horse - told you it was silly) My darling Trusty made Xan feel real silly but
hey....as they walked Xan brought the garbage can into the arena and walked alongside of them she gained speed and stepped in front of them -
without missing a beat that horse dropped his head directly into the garbage can!!!!! I am so upset I didn't have my camera on at that precise
moment - we all started laughing - I mean he just stopped dead and dropped his head right in there without a moment's hesitation he made me think
of a kitten and a bag! Let's just say that was the end of any questions we may have had about spooking.
He did however have a love affair with Xan's shirt - we played peek a boo!"
